Belgrade, Pashalik of

 

an administrative unit of the Ottoman Empire. The Pashalik of Belgrade included the Serbian lands south of the Danube and Sava rivers. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries the Pashalik of Belgrade was the center of the Serbian liberation struggle. It was here that in 1804 a massive anti-Turkish rebellion broke out, which laid the basis for the restoration of an independent Serbian state.
