Bira
or Bira Bol’shaia, a river in the Jewish Autonomous Oblast, Khabarovsk Krai, RSFSR; a left tributary of the Amur River. Length, 424 km; basin area, 9,580 sq km. It is formed by the confluence of the Sutar and Kul’dur rivers, which flow from the Sutar and Lesser Khingan ranges. The Bira River flows mainly along a low-lying plain. It is mostly rain fed. In summer rainfall produces sharp fluctuations in the water level. The city of Birobidzhan is located on the Bira River.
