Birch-Hirsch·feld stain

(bŭrch hĭrsh'feld), an obsolete stain for demonstrating amyloid, using Bismarck brown and crystal violet; amyloid is usually stained a bright ruby red, whereas the cytoplasm of cells is not stained and nuclei are brown.

Birch-Hirschfeld stain

An obsolete histologic stain for amyloid using gentian violet and Bismarck brown. Currently preferred methods for demonstrating amyloid in tissue include the Congo Red stain(s), toluidine Blue method, methyl violet and polarising microscopy.
