demyelinating optic neuritis

demyelinating optic neuritis

An acute inflammation of an optic nerve associated with a drop in visual acuity and colour perception, pain on movement of the eye, a dull periorbital ache and a poor pupil response to direct light. The optic disk may or may not be visibly swollen. This is the presenting feature in 15 to 20 percent of patients with MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS and it occurs in 50 percent of patients with the disease.
