Size: 4,740,912 acres (national park) and 1,334,118 acres (national preserve).
Established: Established as Mount McKinley National Park on February 26, 1917. Separate Denali National Monument proclaimed on December 1, 1978. Both incorporated into and established as Denali National Park and Preserve on December 2, 1980. Wilderness designated on December 2, 1980. Designated a Biosphere Reserve in 1976.
Location:Park headquarters is located along AK 3 (George Parks Highway), 240 miles north of Anchorage, 125 miles south of Fairbanks, and 12 miles south of Healy, Alaska. The Alaska Railroad provides daily summer passenger service to the park from Anchorage and Fairbanks.
Facilities:Campgrounds (é), rest rooms (é), visitor centers (é), ranger station, self-guided tour/trail. Entrance fee required.
Activities:Camping, hiking, mountain climbing, fishing, wildlife viewing, interpretive programs, cross-country skiing, dog mushing, bus tour.
Special Features:The park contains North America's highest mountain, 20,320-foot Mount McKinley. Large glaciers of the Alaska Range, caribou, Dall sheep, moose, grizzly bears, and timber wolves are other highlights of this complete sub-arctic ecosystem.
