Colmatage

Colmatage

(1) The natural deposition of particles suspended in water on land areas, usually on river floodplains and deltas, coastal lowlands, and flooded meadows.

(2) Artificial colmatage is carried out to raise the surface of an area and to increase soil fertility; river deposits and lake silts are used. In the USSR colmatage is done on the Dnestr plavni (low parts of downstream valleys) and in the Kolchis lowlands; in the Netherlands a significant amount of land has been recovered from the sea by this method.

(3) The washing of minute clay or silt particles into the pores of the soil on the bottom and sides of canals, reservoirs, ponds, and the like, thereby reducing seepage.
