Location:North of Bakersfield, 7 miles west of Earlimart and Highway 99 on County Road J22, or 20 miles north of Wasco on Highway 43.
Facilities:15 developed family campsites, picnic areas, showers, restrooms, visitor center, exhibits, historic structures.
Activities:Camping, group tours (by reservation).
Special Features:Established in 1908, the small farming community of Allensworth was theonly California town to be founded, financed, and governed by AfricanAmericans. Its founding father, Colonel Allen Allensworth, was a formerslave, Union soldier, army chaplain, and the highest ranking blackofficer of his time. Uncontrollable circumstances, including a drop inthe area's water table, resulted in the town's demise, but, withcontinuing restoration and special events, the town is coming back tolife as a state historic park.
