Cordillera Real a mountain range in the Bolivian Andes, east of Lake Titicaca, rising to 6,550 m in Mount IIlampu. It is composed chiefly of Paleozoic sedimentary rock, breached by intrusions, and strongly dissected by the rivers of the Beni basin. Alpine relief forms prevail, and there is considerable glaciation in the north and south. The eastern slopes are covered with tropical rain forests and the western slopes with semideserts. La Paz, the capital of Bolivia, is situated on the upper reaches of the La Paz River. |
