Eights Coast

 

a section of the coast of Ellsworth Land, in Western Antarctica. Eights Coast extends more than 500 km from 85° to 102° W long.; a large part of the coast is occupied by the Abbot Ice Shelf. The mountainous Thurston Island, which reaches a maximum elevation of 1,000 m, is situated in the western part of the region. Eights Coast was named for J. Eights, who in 1829 and 1830 was the first American geologist to visit the antarctic.
