Birseck

a cave in Switzerland, near Basel. It was excavated by the Swiss archaeologist F. Sarasin in 1910 and 1914. In addition to flint tools and animal bones, more than 100 broken river pebbles, covered with designs, were found in the Azilian (early Mesolithic) culture layer. They are comparable to the Australian churingas and are linked with rites of primitive magic.
