Biruni
a city (until 1962, a settlement); center of Biruni Raion, Kara-Kalpak ASSR (part of the Uzbek SSR). Located on the right bank of the Amu Darya River, 20 km northeast of the Urgench railroad station (on the left bank). Population, 18,000 (1968). There are two cottongin plants and oil-expulsion, brick, and asphalt plants. The city is named after Biruni.
