Denizli

(dĕnēzlē`), city (1990 pop. 203,130), capital of Denizli prov., W Turkey. Picturesquely situated, it is an agricultural market center and the gateway for excursions by tourists to the nearby ruins of LaodiceaLaodicea
, name of several Greek cities of Asia and Asia Minor built by the Seleucids in the 3d cent. B.C. The most important, Laodicea ad Lycum, was N of Colossae near the present Denizli. On the trade route from the East, the city prospered, particularly under Rome.

. The city was captured by the Ottoman Turks in 1389. It was badly damaged by earthquakes in 1710 and 1899.

a city in southwestern Turkey, administrative center of the vilayet of Denizli. Population, 64,300 (1965). The city has a railroad station and is a road junction. It has textile manufacturing; manganese ore is mined in the vicinity. North of Denizli are the ruins of the ancient city of Laodicea.
