core lab core lab A term of art referring to a (consolidated) diagnostic laboratory, usually understood to be located at a distance from an acute (hospital) trust in the UK, which generates results (e.g., histopathology, microbiology, virology) from a specimen in more than four hours—i.e., from days to weeks. Core labs are designed to create economy of scale, such that the larger they are, the lower the cost due to greater volumes of work, fewer workers and lower costs of quality control reagents and so on. |
