Bistrita

a city in Rumania situated on the Bistriţa River of the Somesul river basin; administrative center of Bistriţa-Násáud District. It has a population of 25,500 (1966). Its industries are the food industry (a new dairy plant and other enterprises), the furniture industry, and the leather and footwear industry. There are clothing, metalworking, and ceramics enterprises.

a river in Rumania; right tributary of the Siretul River of the Danube Basin. It is 272 km long and drains an area of 7,900 sq km. The river rises in the Rodna massif in the Eastern Carpathians and flows in a mountainous area where sections of broad valleys alternate with gorges. There is high water in the spring and summer. The mean annual flowrate at the mouth is about 55 cu m/sec. There are hydroelectric power plants on the river, the largest being the V. I. Lenin Power Plant with a capacity of 210,000 kW. The Bistriţa is also used for floating timber and irrigation. The cities of Piatra-Neamt, Buhuşi, and Bacău are situated on the river.
