(navigation) The shortest navigational distance between two points on the earth's surface, for example, the great circle.

direct route

A requested route published on an en route or area chart to assist pilots who have previous knowledge of acceptance of these routes by air traffic control (ATC). Use of a direct route may require prior ATC approval and may not provide ATC or advisory services or be acceptable in flight plans.
