In southwestern corner of NY, southwest of Buffalo; organized Mar 11, 1808 from Genesee County. Name Origin: For Lake Chautauqua, which is in the middle of the county; its name is a contraction of Seneca Indian words of uncertain origin and meaning; possibly 'where the fish was taken out.'
