Bitsadze, Andrei Vasil’evich

 

Born May 9 (22), 1916, in the village of Tskhrukveti, Georgia. Soviet mathematician, corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1958) and academician of the Georgian SSR Academy of Sciences (1969). Member of the CPSU since 1947.

Bitsadze graduated from the University of Tbilisi (1940). From 1940 to 1948 he worked in the Tbilisi Mathematical Institute of the Georgian SSR Academy of Sciences, then in the Mathematical Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences, and from 1959 at the Institute of Mathematics of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences and at the University of Novosibirsk. His work is in the mathematical theory of elasticity, the theory of functions, the theory of equations of mixed type, and the theory of boundary-value problems for elliptical systems of equations. He has been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and medals.
