AFN

ISO 4217 code for the new Afghan afghani. It was introduced in 2002, following the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan. It replaced the old afghani (code AFA), which was not a united currency, being issued separately by both the Taliban and the Northern Alliance. The new afghani has become a much more stable currency than its predecessor, even appreciating against the U.S. dollar starting in 2004.
