Afontova Mountain

a group of four dwelling sites of the late Paleolithic period; located on the left bank of the Enisei near the city of Krasnoiarsk. The first site was discovered by I. T. Savenkov in 1884. Excavations were conducted under N. K. Auerbakh, V. I.Gromov, and G. P. Sosnovskii, mainly in the period 1923–25. Mud hut dwellings were discovered. Other discoveries included stone implements in the form of hand blades, scrapers, spearheads, and grindstones; bone implements included awls, needles, spear tips, and spikes with grooves for insets. Decorations were also found. Among findings of fauna, remains of the caribou predominate.
