Den-Terek

the site of a fortified settlement on the right bank of the Elegest River, 2 km to the northwest of the village of Kochetovo in Tandinskii Raion, Tuva ASSR. It is the remains of a Mongolian city of the first half of the 13th century and is identified with the administrative center of the Ilangchou region (the center of the northern Mongolian military settlements). In 1956-57 excavations directed by L. R. Kyzlasov unearthed the remains of brick buildings and frame houses with cane and tile roofs. The population mined coal and iron ore, smelted iron and pig iron, and manufactured weapons, vessels, textiles, and the like. Some of the population engaged in plow farming using artificial irrigation.
