Cornel Medrea

Medrea, Cornel

Born Mar. 8, 1889, in Mercurea, Sibiu District, Rumania; died May 25, 1964, in Bucharest. Rumanian sculptor. People’s Artist of the Rumanian Socialist Republic. Full member of the Rumanian Academy.

From 1909 to 1912, Medrea studied at the Institute of Decorative and Applied Arts in Budapest. In 1933 he began teaching at the School of Fine Arts in Bucharest. During the latter half of the second decade of the 20th century and in the early 1920’s, Medrea was influenced by expressionism; his later works were influenced by neoclassicism.

Medrea did portraits (for example, Portrait of C Baba, 1954, plaster of paris, C. Medrea Museum, Bucharest) and various types of sculptural compositions, including decorative monumental works (Motherhood, 1954; The Siren, 1963—both stone, in Mamaia).
