Pharmacology A retinoic acid derivative that stimulates epithelial differentiation and inhibits the malignant transformation of skin and mucosa; it is a 2nd line agent for psoriasis in combination with PUVA, to ↓ dose of methoxsalen. See Psoriasis.

etretinate

(ĕ-trĕt′ĭn-āt) A tretinoin drug formerly used to treat severe recalcitrant psoriasis.

CAUTION!

Etretinate must not be used by women who are pregnant or who intend to become pregnant. It should be prescribed only by physicians knowledgeable in the systemic use of retinoids.
