In the USSR bone cheekpieces dating from the first millennium B.C. have been found in the forest and steppe zone and bronze ones in Southern Siberia and the Caucasus. The Scythians and the Sarmatians used iron cheekpieces. With the increase in the size of the bridle rings and the invention of the curb and the snaffle, the use of cheekpieces was gradually abandoned beginning in the early second millennium A.D.
