Corn Institute

 

the All-Union Scientific Research Corn Institute, an institute formed from the Ukrainian Scientific Re-search Institute of Corn Farming in 1956 as part of the Lenin All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences.

The All-Union Scientific Research Corn Institute is the corn industry’s main institute and breeding center. It functions as a research establishment for farming in the steppe zone of the Ukrainian SSR. The institute is located in the city of Dnepropetrovsk. In 1971 it had 12 experimental plant breeding stations with 36,400 hectares of farmland. By 1971 the nation’s farms were planting 22 of the corn varieties and hybrids and 51 of the new varieties of other field crops cultivated in the USSR that had been developed by the institute. The technology for the mechanized cultivation of corn and winter wheat and the system of procedures for raising farming productivity in the Ukrainian steppes developed by the institute are being put into production. The Corn Institute has published Biulleten’ since 1956. The institute was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor in 1971.
