Eitner, Lorenz

Eitner, Lorenz (Edwin Alfred)

(1919– ) art historian; born in Brunn, Czechoslovakia. He became an American citizen and studied at Duke (B.A. 1940), and Princeton (M.F.A. 1948; Ph.D. 1952). He served in the Army with the Office of Strategic Services (1943–46), and in the Office of Chief of Prosecution, Nuremberg War Crimes Trials (1946–47). A specialist in 18th- and 19th-century European paintings, he taught primarily at Stanford (1963), and wrote many scholarly books and articles.
