Chefoo Convention of 1876

an agreement imposed on China by Great Britain, which used the murder of a British official in Yunnan as a pretext for making its demands. The agreement was signed Sept. 13,1876, in Chefoo (Yent’ai). The Chefoo Convention granted Great Britain a number of privileges; in particular, it opened the ports of Ich’ang, Wuhu, Wenchou, and Pakhoi (Peihai) to English trade.
