cyclamates

cyclamates

A family (calcium cyclamate and its metabolites, cyclohexylamine, cyclamic acid and sodium cyclamate) of artificial sweeteners, banned by the FDA in 1970 when they were linked to bladder cancer in rats given extremely high doses. Subsequent studies have failed to reveal direct, intrinsic genotoxicity of cyclamate, although when added to saccharin (another artificial sweetener), there was an additive tumourigenic effect, causing a focal increase in tumours of the bladder epithelium.
