aseptic techniques

techniques, performed in an environment such as a hospital operating theatre, a cell culture laboratory or a microbiology laboratory, which are intended to prevent the contamination of persons, animals, plants, microbial cultures, sterile media and so on, by unwanted MICROORGANISMS. To achieve this the atmosphere may be filtered or other precautions may be taken to avoid air-borne contamination. Instruments are sterilized, usually by high temperature treatment, for example in an AUTOCLAVE or by flaming the surface of the objects. Protective outer clothing is worn, which is often sterilized. The operator may additionally wear a face mask and gloves. Such techniques should not be confused with the use of ANTISEPTICS.
