caloric test

A test of the balancing mechanisms in the inner ear. Instillation of hot and cold water into the ear causes jerky movement of the eyes (NYSTAGMUS) if the vestibular apparatus is functioning normally. If, however, there is disease of the balancing mechanism (semicircular canals) the nystagmus will be absent or much reduced in extent.
