Blackwell, David H. (Harold)

(1919– ) statistician; born in Centralia, Ill. This noted African-American educator, a National Academy of Sciences member (1965), taught at the Berkeley Department of Statistics (1954) where he chaired the department (1957–61). He was a Rosenwald Fellow at Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study (1941–42), president of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (1955), and a faculty research lecturer at the University of California (1971), specializing in Markoff chains and sequential analysis.
