Bijapur

a medieval state in India. Its founder was the Bahmani vicegerent Yusuf Adilkhan, who in 1489 proclaimed himself independent sovereign and started the Adilshahi dynasty. The uprising of the Marathas under the leadership of Sivaji and wars with the Moguls weakened Bijapur. In 1686, Bijapur was annexed to the state of the Great Moguls.

Bijapur

a city in India in the state of Mysore. From 1490 to 1686 it was the center of the kingdom of the same name. Part of the old city, known as Nauraspur and surrounded by walls, has been preserved. In the center stands an ancient citadel with a mosque (14th century) and a palace (c. 1646). Bijapur is famous for its monumental edifices made of basalt trap and combining architectural daring with chiselled elegance of detail. These include the Gol Gumbaz tomb (1656–60) with seven-tiered towers at its corners and a huge (external diameter 44 m) dome and the three-story Mihtar-i-Mahall Gate (approximately 1620); outside the city is the mausoleum of Ibrahim (1615) capped by a spherical dome.
