corpus cal·lo·sum C0658000 (kə-lō′səm)n. pl. corpora cal·lo·sa (kə-lō′sə) The arched bridge of nervous tissue that connects the two cerebral hemispheres, allowing communication between the right and left sides of the brain. [New Latin corpus callōsum : Latin corpus, body + Latin callōsum, neuter of callōsus, callous.]corpus callosum (kəˈləʊsəm) n, pl corpora callosa (kəˈləʊsə) (Anatomy) the band of white fibres that connects the cerebral hemispheres in mammals[New Latin, literally: callous body]cor•pus cal•lo•sum (ˈkɔr pəs kəˈloʊ səm) n., pl. cor•po•ra cal•lo•sa (ˈkɔr pər ə kəˈloʊ sə) the thick band of transverse nerve fibers between the two halves of the cerebrum in placental mammals. [1700–10; < New Latin: literally, firm body] corpus callosumThe band of nerve fibers joining both hemispheres of the cerebrum.ThesaurusNoun | 1. | corpus callosum - a broad transverse nerve tract connecting the two cerebral hemispherescommissure - a bundle of nerve fibers passing from one side to the other of the brain or spinal cordforebrain, prosencephalon - the anterior portion of the brain; the part of the brain that develops from the anterior part of the neural tube | Translationscorpus callosum
corpus callosum: see brainbrain, the supervisory center of the nervous system in all vertebrates. It also serves as the site of emotions, memory, self-awareness, and thought. Anatomy and Function ..... Click the link for more information. .Corpus Callosum in placental mammals and man, the aggregation of nerve fibers connecting the cerebral hemispheres. The corpus callosum develops in the higher mammals from the commissure of the mantle (present in lung-fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and cloacal mammals) in connection with the strong development of the cerebral cortex. The fibers of the corpus callosum run mostly in a transverse direction, connecting and exchanging neural impulses between matching areas of the hemispheres. Therefore, both hemispheres together constitute a single unit. Fibers connecting different gyri in the two hemispheres also pass through the corpus callosum (for example, frontal with parietal or occipital). The fibers of the corpus callosum also send collaterals (associative fibers) to different parts of the same hemisphere. corpus callosum[′kȯr·pəs kə′lō·səm] (neuroscience) A band of nerve tissue connecting the cerebral hemispheres in humans and higher mammals. corpus callosum

Lying at the floor of the longitudinal fissure, and covered on each side by the cingulate gyrus, it is arched from behind forward and is thicker at each extremity (splenium [TA] and genu [TA]) but thinner in its long central portion (truncus [TA]); it curves back underneath itself at the genu to form the rostrum [TA] of the corpus callosum.
