Chernye Mountains

 

(“Black Mountains,” from the dark color of the wooded ridges), the name of the frontal ranges of the Greater Caucasus, situated north of the Skalistyi Range, between the Belaia River in the west and the Argun River in the east. The Chernye Mountains rise to elevations of 1,500 m and for the most part resemble cuestas, with gentle northern slopes and steep southern slopes. The slopes have forests of oak, beech, and other trees.
