Blastaar
Blastaar (pop culture)“The Living Bomb-Burst” Blastaar, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, first exploded onto the scene in Fantastic Four #62–#63 (1967). As the FF's Reed (Mr. Fantastic) Richards and his ally Triton of the Inhumans scarcely escape the precarious antimatter realm called the Negative Zone, their exodus is viewed by a bestial entity trapped there: Blastaar, the “most deadly of all living beings” (in his own arrogant words, which he shrieks at an earpiercing volume). Breaking free of an “adhesion suit” fashioned by his own people who rebelled against his brutality, Blastaar trails the heroes to Earth, where he joins forces with the FF's foe the Sandman, who quickly regrets this alliance after witnessing Blastaar's unbridled power. The superhumanly strong Blastaar's fingertips discharge unfathomable force that obliterates buildings and propels him like a rocket through the air. Hell-bent on oppressing Earth, Blastaar storms through New York City, and only one of the Fantastic Four's amazing attributes stops him: the intellect of Richards, who slaps an energy-nullifying helmet onto the creature. Blastaar repeatedly endeavored to gain dominion over Earth, with Richards finding ways to return him to the Negative Zone (or to banish him to other worlds), making the two bitter adversaries. Richards is not alone on Blastaar's enemies list: the Avengers, the X-Men, Thor, and Spider-Man are among the many superheroes he has battled. Blastaar briefly regained control over his race on the world of Baluur, inside the Negative Zone, but mutinous members of the Baluurian army, led by an officer named Tanjaar, overthrew him (Fantastic Four #289, 1986). His greatest rival is his fellow Negative Zoner Annihilus, with whom he has skirmished inside and outside of the Zone. The Living Bomb-Burst has been featured in all three of the Fantastic Four animated television series (in 1967, 1978, and 1994) and has also been produced as an action figure by manufacturer Toy Biz. |
