Camouflage, Breach of

violation of camouflage by troops, permitting the enemy to detect the location of troops and military objects and determine the number of troops, the nature of their activity, and so forth.

Indications that lead to breach of camouflage include crowded disposition of troops, headquarters, and service elements on the terrain and in populated areas and careless camouflage of them; movement by individual soldiers, sub-units, and vehicles within the troop disposition; burning fires; vehicle headlights at night; gunshot flashes and sounds; the sounds of motor vehicle and tank engines; the operation of transmitting radio stations; the color of an object’s surface and its shape and dimensions; and shadows falling from an object.
