Established: Authorized on August 20, 1969.
Location:35 miles west of Colorado Springs, Colorado. From north/south on I-25, take US 24 west 35 miles to town of Florissant, then follow signs 2 miles south to the visitor center.
Facilities:Picnic area, rest rooms (é), visitor center (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Entrance fee required.
Activities:Hiking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, guided tours, interpretive programs.
Special Features:A wealth of fossil insects, seeds, and leaves of the Oligocene Period are preserved here in remarkable detail. Here, too, is an unusual display of petrifiedredwood stumps up to 14 feet wide.
