Eugene Dupont

Dupont, Eugene

Born 1831; died 1881. French socialist; member of the First International. Musical instrument maker by profession.

Dupont participated in the June uprising in 1848 and went to Great Britain after it was suppressed. He was elected to the General Council of the First International in November 1864. Between June 1865 and September 1871, Dupont was corresponding secretary for France, a delegate to several conferences and congresses of the International, chairman of the Lausanne Congress of 1867, and vice chairman of the Brussels Congress of 1868. Dupont supported the position of K. Marx in the International and strongly fought against Proudhonism, Bakuninism, and trade unionism. He settled in the USA in 1874.
