Bloch Marc Bloch Marc (1886-1944) French medieval historian who taught in Strasbourg and, from 1936, at the Sorbonne in Paris. His influence in sociology is mainly through his important book Feudal Society, published in English in 1961, in which he stressed the workings of feudal society as a whole, rather than emphasizing either the political or economic aspects which other theorists favoured. He was cofounder (1931) of the Annales d'histoire économique et sociale (see ANNALES SCHOOL). He was murdered by the Gestapo in 1944 for his role in the French Resistance.
