Ferrari, Lodovico

Born Feb. 2, 1522, in Bologna; died there 1565. Italian mathematician.

A student of G. Cardano’s, Ferrari discovered a method for solving fourth-degree algebraic equations through the introduction of an auxiliary unknown whose value is obtained from a cubic equation derived from the given equation. The method was published by Cardano in 1545.
