Ferreira Borges, José

 

Born June 6, 1786, in Porto; died there Nov. 14, 1838. Portuguese political figure. Lawyer.

Beginning in 1818, Ferreira Borges was an active member of the bourgeois revolutionary organization Sinédrio, which was founded in Porto. When the revolution of 1820 broke out, he became secretary of the Provisional Junta of the Supreme Government in Porto, which merged with the junta in Lisbon in September 1820. He was a deputy to the revolutionary Cortes in 1821 and 1822 and on Mar. 6, 1823, became a member of the State Council. With the onset of reaction, Ferreira Borges emigrated in May 1823.
