Jebeleanu, Eugen

Born Apr. 24, 1911, in Cîmpina. Rumanian poet. Corresponding member of the Academy of the Socialist Republic of Rumania.

Jebeleanu’s first poems were published in 1928. His collection Hearts Under Sabres, in which the influence of modernism may be seen, was published in 1934. In the 1930’ s he wrote articles calling for friendship with the Soviet Union. Some of Jebeleanu’s poems deal with social themes, and these themes have become predominant since the victory of popular democracy in Rumania in 1945. His poetic art has developed greatly since the 1950’s; publicistic tendencies are especially strong in the collections Poems of Struggle and Peace (1950), Hiroshima’s Smile (1958), Oratorio of Liberation (1959), and Songs Against Death (1963), which are rousing calls to action.
