Burnouf, Eugène

 

Born Aug. 12, 1801, in Paris; died there May 28, 1852. French Orientalist. Studied at the School of Charters (1822) and the School of Law (1823-24). Professor at the Collège de France from 1832 and a member of the Académie aes Inscriptions of the Institut de France.

Burnouf began the scientific study of the Pali language, concerned himself with the problems of Buddhism, and studied the language and literature of the A vesta. He translated the Bhagavad Purana (vols. 1-5, 1840-98) into French.
