Cosmas of Prague

Born about 1045; died Oct. 21, 1125, in Prague. First Czech chronicler.

Cosmas of Prague belonged to a noble family. He was educated in Prague and Liège and visited Hungary, Germany, and Italy in the retinue of the German emperor Henry IV. In 1110 he became dean of the Cathedral of St. Vitus in Prague. His Czech Chronicle, begun in 1119–20, contains a wealth of material and is a valuable source for the history of Bohemia— particularly the third book, in which contemporary events (1092–1125) are described. As a representative of the upper clergy, Cosmas defended the interests of the Catholic Church and the Přemyslid dynasty. Cosmas’ successors continued to chronicle Czech history to the beginning of the 13th century.
