A principle stating that there are no preferred places in the Universe. This is the basis for much of modern cosmology and is an extreme case of the Copernican view that the Earth is not the center of the Universe. Neglecting local irregularities, measurements of the limited regions of the Universe available to Earth-based observers are then valid samples of the whole Universe.
