Acollas, Émile

Born June 24, 1826, in La Chatre; died Oct. 17, 1891, in Asnières (Seine department). French jurist and political leader.

Acollas was a professor of law at the University of Bern and dean of the Paris University law school during the days of the Paris Commune. A radical socialist, Acollas advocated the democratization of civil legislation. His scholarly works on problems of civil law and the theory of law include The Need for Revision of Our Law Codes, and Especially of the Napoleonic Code, in Keeping With the Idea of Democracy (1866) and A Course in Civil Law (1869).
