blowdown turbine

blowdown turbine

[′blō‚dau̇n ‚tər·bən] (aerospace engineering) A turbine attached to a reciprocating engine which receives exhaust gases separately from each cylinder, utilizing the kinetic energy of the gases.

blowdown turbine

blowdown turbineA power-recovery turbine driven by exhaust gases of a reciprocating engine and coupled through a fluid coupling to the engine crankshaft. In this case, the velocity of the exhaust gases rather than the pressure of the gases is used to produce the power. This type of turbine creates minimum back pressure on the exhaust system. The turbine itself is cooled by ram air ducted from the intercylinder baffles.
