Elective Quota

in electoral law the number of votes necessary to elect one deputy in a particular election district.

Elective quotas are usually used in the system of proportional representation in cases where there are large election districts that select several deputies. The quota is computed by dividing the total number of valid votes cast by the number of seats to be filled in the district. After the distribution of seats according to the elective quota, the remaining votes are distributed in several ways—for instance, through the system of the greatest remainder, the system of the largest average (the d’Hondt system), or the system of the single transferable vote (the Hare system).
