Endgate seeder

Endgate seeder

A planting method that closely approximated hand sowing. Seed was dropped onto a rotating disc and thrown off uniformly. The seeder was attached to the back of a wagon and powered from a rear wheel. The seed hopper was refilled as necessary from the wagon box. These machines were originally hand-operated (knapsack seeders), but by the 1870s had been attached to the back of a wagon.
