The dab’s lateral line has a bend above the pectoral fin. The fish is usually 20–30 cm long (sometimes up to 40 cm) and weighs 150–300 g (sometimes up to 700 g). It is distributed in the seas that wash the western and northern coasts of Europe (from the Bay of Biscay to the White Sea). It keeps to the coastal zone at depths not exceeding 50–70 m. Spawning takes place from May through August at a depth of 25–50 m; the fecundity is 80,000–140,000 eggs. The eggs float in the depths of the water; the larvae are symmetrical and live on the bottom even before they acquire their asymmetrical shape. The dab feeds on invertebrates, less frequently, on small fish.
