Aušra
Aušrā
(Dawn), the first Lithuanian sociopolitical and literary newspaper (1883–86). As a result of its being banned by the Lithuanian press, Aušrā was published in East Prussia and illegally distributed in Lithuania. The founder and first editor was the bourgeois Lithuanian public figure J. Basa-navicius. Ausra carried on the struggle for the cultural rights of Lithuanians, and it reflected the interests of the liberal bourgeoisie. In its pages the works of Maironis, V. Kudirka, and J. Mačys-KékStas, among others, were first published.
